Karwa Chauth is observed during Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in Kartika according to the Hindu calendar. It falls on the fourth day of the Karthik month, every year. This year, Karva Chauth will be observed on Wednesday, November 01, 2023.

Karwa Chauth vrat is observed during 'Krishna Paksha Chaturthi' in the Hindu month of Kartik, according to Drik Panchang, and Ashwin month is current during Karwa Chauth according to the Amanta calendar followed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Southern India. The only difference is the name of the month, and Karwa Chauth is observed on the same day in all states, according to the Drik Panchang.

Karwa Chauth falls on the same day as 'Sankashti Chaturthi,' a fasting day dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Married women observe Karwa Chauth fasting and rituals for the long life of their husband. Married women worship Lord Shiva and His family, including Lord Ganesha, and only break their fast after seeing and offering to the moon. Karwa Chauth fasting is strict and is observed without eating or drinking anything after sunrise until the sighting of the moon at night.

Karwa Chauth is also referred to as 'Karak Chaturthi'. Karwa or Karak refers to the earthen pot used to make the water offering known as 'Argha' to the moon. Karwa is very important during Puja and is also given as Dan to any eligible woman or Brahmin.

Karwa Chauth is more popular in North Indian states than in South Indian states. 'Ahoi Ashtami Vrat' is observed for the well-being of children after four days of Karwa Chauth.
