Jivitputrika Vrat 2024: Jitiya Vrat is observed every year on Ashtami Tithi during the Krishna Paksha of the Ashwin month. Much like the Chhath Puja, this vrat also follows traditions like 'Nahay Khay' and 'Kharna.' Devotees offer Arghya (water offering) to both the rising and setting sun.

This vrat is mainly observed in certain parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, where mothers fast without water for the well-being of their children and worship Lord Jimutvahan.

Jitiya Vrat Date in 2024: September 24 or 25?

According to the Hindu Panchang, the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in Ashwin month will begin at 12:38 PM on September 24, 2024, and will end at 12:10 PM on September 25, 2024.

Therefore, Jitiya Vrat will be observed on September 25, 2024, with the fasting ritual (puja) being performed between 4:43 PM and 6:14 PM.

How Is Jitiya Vrat Observed?

Jitiya Vrat is considered as challenging as Chhath. On the first day of the vrat, women take a bath before sunrise and begin their fast after offering prayers. After the initial prayers and meal, they fast without consuming water for the entire day, worship Lord Jimutvahan, and break the fast after performing the required rituals.

Jitiya Vrat Puja Rituals

On the day of Jivitputrika Vrat, after taking a morning bath, women clean the puja area by smearing it with cow dung. A small pond is created near the puja spot, and a branch of the Pakar tree is placed beside it. The idol of Lord Jimutvahan, made of Kusha grass, is placed in the pond water and worshipped with incense, rice, vermilion, flowers, and lamps.

Women also craft idols of eagles and jackals out of clay and cow dung, apply vermilion on their foreheads, listen to the Jitiya Vrat Katha (story), and complete their fast by performing the Parana (ritual breaking of the fast).
