All Hindu scriptures and Puranas advise performing the Raksha Bandhan rituals after the end of Bhadra. This period is considered inauspicious; hence, it is recommended not to tie Rakhi during Bhadra Kaal. Raksha Bandhan, a sacred festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters, should be observed at an auspicious time. According to the hindu mythology, Ravana's sister tied Rakhi during Bhadra, which ultimately led to his demise. Since then, it has been considered ill-advised for any sister to tie Rakhi to her brother during this time.

Who is Bhadra?

Bhadra is the sister of Shani Dev, the deity of justice, and the daughter of Surya Dev and Goddess Chhaya. Bhadra is known for her fiery temperament and terrifying appearance. According to mythology, Bhadra, upon her birth, began causing chaos and destruction, disrupting sacred rituals, and spreading distress across the world. Witnessing her malevolent nature, Surya Dev became anxious about how to arrange her marriage. When all the gods declined the proposal for Bhadra's marriage, Surya Dev sought the help of Lord Brahma.

Lord Brahma blessed Bhadra with the boon that she would reside in the times and places where auspicious and holy activities are conducted. He declared, "O Bhadra, you will dwell in the seventh Karan, at the end of Bava, Balava, Kaulava, and Taitila Karans." Thus, Brahma allotted a portion of time to Bhadra.

Bhadra accepted Brahma's words and took her place in a segment of time. Consequently, no auspicious activities should be initiated during Bhadra Kaal, as any ceremonies performed during this time are believed to be unsuccessful.
