Vijayawada: Showing the effectiveness of Andhra Pradesh police department's women's safety mobile app Disha, Vijayawada police held an eve teaser within six minutes of a victim pressing the SOS button.


As per the Vijayawada police commissioner, B. Sreenivasulu today (July 24) said that they apprehended the offender was in six minutes from the spot.


The crime was said to be occurred near the railway club in Satyanarayana Puram part of the city, according to the sources.


The accused unidentified as Akash, 19, has been harassing the girl, who is probably his classmate, for quite some time, and the victim is said to have complained about the incident to her father who took the issue to the college principal, but the boy didn’t stop harassing her.


The DCP said, despite being warned many times, Akash did not change his behaviour and yesterday stalked the girl right in the presence of her father while returning home after examination.

Vexed by the harassment, the girl pressed the SOS button on the women's safety app, triggering an alert to the police station from the Disha call centre.


"We immediately responded and within six minutes police reached the spot and the accused was taken to the police station and a case was registered against him." IANS wrote DCP’s quote.


According to the AP police, the 19-year-old girl triggered the alarm at 12.31 p.m. and the police held the eve teaser under custody by 12.37 p.m. A case was booked against the boy under IPC Sections 354 (D) and 506.


The police commissioner said the app is working useful tool to apprehend unruly people violating women's rights and noted that the city police response time is 5-6 minutes to attend to an emergency.

He took to notice that the response time could be 15-20 minutes in the outskirts of the city and rural areas.


Police officials lauded the Disha app and said that the accused will be take accused under custody and a case will be filed against him.
