Hyderabad: A minor girl in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada committed suicide alleging sexual harassment by a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader, police said on Sunday.

The girl who jumped from the fifth floor of a building was studying in class 9. She wrote in a suicide letter that she was taking her own life because TDP leader Vinod Jain had sexually harassed her.

ACP Hanumantrao said a case has been registered against Vinod Jain following a complaint by the girl's family members. He clarified that cases had been filed against the accused under sections 306 of IPC and the POCSO Act. Police said the suspect was arrested.

The girl's parents are demanding that the accused be severely punished.

Police said they would register cases under further sections based on the girl's postmortem report. Police said they had already seized Vinod Jain's house for questioning and found that Vinod Jain had been sexually harassing the girl for the past two months, ABP Desam reports.

Vasireddy Padma, the head of the Andhra Pradesh State Women's Commission, stated that the government has taken the issue seriously and that all efforts will be made to ensure that the perpetrator receives a severe punishment.

MLA RK Roja also reacted to the incident. She said this incident was going to be tragic. She questioned how TDP leaders were harassing women and initiating Nari Sankalpa Deeksha.

She criticised that TDP leaders were incensed to push others by doing wrong things. Ms Roja demanded that the accused be severely punished.
