Hyderabad: A man who slit the throat of another person during Sankranthi celebrations in Chittoor district earlier this week has been arrested by the local police.

The gory murder took place on Sunday when people were preparing for an animal sacrifice, as part of the local festival, in Valasapalle village under Madanapalle Rural Zone.

According to the villagers' version, local resident Suresh was holding the goat that accused Chalapathi was to slaughter. They said Chalapathi, who was in an inebriated state, slit Suresh's throat, instead of the goat's.

The victim was rushed to Madanapalle Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

While it was earlier suspected that Chalapathi did this by mistake as he was under the influence of liquor, the police have now said he actually acted in "revenge" because Suresh did not donate money for the Sankranthi celebrations.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Ravi Manoharachari said their preliminary investigation revealed that Suresh was murdered.

For the Sankranthi festival, the police said, the villagers of Valasapalle made donations like every year, but Suresh didn't contribute anything.

Chalapathi was not pleased with that and he chopped off Suresh's head at the time of animal sacrifice, the police said. He was taken into custody at Handrineva Canal on Tuesday evening and interrogated.

The police said they were shocked when Chalapathi confessed that he had killed Suresh because he made no contribution for the festival.

DSP Manoharachari congratulated Madanapalle Rural CI Srinivasan and SI Chandrasekhar for arresting the accused within 48 hours of the crime.
