Why is Opposition emphasising on conducting 'caste census'?

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav have come together on the issue of conducting a caste-based census. Many opposition parties are in the favour of conducting caste based census. The census is being done in India since 1872 and this process has never been broken.
