Waqf Bill: Muslim groups protest, UP on alert; PM Modi says bill ensures transparency, justice

ABP News Bureau   |  04 Apr 2025 10:31 AM (IST)

Following the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill in both houses of Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called it a significant moment in India’s legislative journey. While protests by Muslim groups continue across parts of Uttar Pradesh, and the police remain on high alert ahead of Friday prayers, the Prime Minister defended the bill, emphasizing its purpose to ensure transparency and protect public interest.Addressing the concerns, PM Modi stated that the Waqf system had long suffered from a lack of transparency, which often led to misuse and neglect. He said the new law aims to rectify this by ensuring that the management of waqf properties becomes more accountable. He added that the bill is especially crucial for empowering communities that have historically been marginalized.Highlighting another concern, PM Modi said that Muslim women’s rights had been ignored under the old system and that the new amendment will help safeguard their interests.Meanwhile, in cities like Lakhimpur and Moradabad, police forces have intensified security to maintain law and order. Marches were held and sensitive areas are under surveillance as authorities prepare for potential unrest during Friday prayers.
