SIR Debate: Congress MP Ujjwal Raman Singh Demands Deep Electoral Reforms in Parliament

ABP News Bureau   |  09 Dec 2025 01:38 PM (IST)

Congress Lok Sabha MP Ujjwal Raman Singh has called for comprehensive electoral reforms while speaking on the Special Identification Review (SIR) and related issues. During an interaction, Singh said that the demand for discussion on SIR had been raised throughout the previous parliamentary session, but the matter was not taken up seriously by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. He stated that significant time had been lost and that both SIR and election reform have now become serious national issues. Singh accused the government of avoiding meaningful debate on electoral reforms over the last 11 years, despite the growing need for transparency and public trust. Raising concerns about declining public confidence in the Election Commission, Singh said it is important to restore faith in this constitutionally independent institution. He also referred to the recommendations of the Indrajit Gupta Committee, especially its proposal for state funding of elections, arguing that the current system makes it nearly impossible for economically weaker candidates to contest elections fairly. He added that monopoly in political and economic systems weakens democracy and claimed that the opposition, including Rahul Gandhi, has consistently raised concerns about electoral integrity and public trust.
