Mahadangal: Language Politics Sparks Violence in Maharashtra; Debate Escalates Over Marathi vs Hindi

ABP News Bureau   |  05 Jul 2025 10:36 AM (IST)

The ongoing language controversy in Maharashtra has escalated into violence, with multiple incidents reported from areas around Mumbai where individuals were allegedly assaulted for not speaking Marathi. The situation turned political after a man was reportedly beaten inside the office of former Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Rajan Vichare. Critics argue that language should unite, not divide, and learning multiple languages strengthens a nation. However, in India, politicians often exploit linguistic, regional, and religious differences to gain votes, especially when they face political setbacks. Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane stirred further debate by questioning why Muslims are asked to speak Marathi, suggesting the issue has taken a communal turn. He asked whether spreading hatred in the name of opposing Hindi will now be used to secure votes. Sanjay Nirupam also pointed out that even Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray never opposed Hindi—highlighting that he launched a Hindi newspaper Dopahar Ka Saamna. The backlash over the attacks has raised concerns that divisive politics are once again dominating public discourse, just ahead of assembly elections. While Marathi deserves full respect, using it as a tool of political intimidation only weakens social harmony.
