Mahadangal: Can You Edit Devotion? ‘Makhan Chor’ Tag Sparks Controversy | ABP NEWS

ABP News Bureau   |  24 Aug 2025 10:19 AM (IST)

In ABP News’ primetime show Mahadangal, a fiery debate unfolded over Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s proposal to stop referring to Lord Krishna as “Makhan Chor” (butter thief). The CM claims that the word “chor” is disrespectful and a distortion created during Mughal times. He argues Krishna should only be remembered as Yogeshwar—the divine guide of the Bhagavad Gita—not through playful titles. In support, panelist Arun Krishna said such terms dilute Krishna’s real identity and that the youth should connect with Krishna's intellectual and spiritual role. On the other hand, religious scholar Acharya Vikramaditya slammed the move, calling it “foolish” and “an attack on tradition.” He cited scriptures like the Bhagavatam, Surdas' bhajans, and Chor Ashtakam, which glorify Krishna's playful childhood leelas including butter stealing as a form of divine love. Critics argue that the government is interfering with centuries-old traditions and misinterpreting devotional metaphors. The debate highlighted the deep emotional and religious connection millions of Indians have with Lord Krishna's "Makhan Chor" image.
