View In AppOn Saturday, N Chandrababu Naidu, the president of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, requested the central government to consider rescheduling loans incurred during the previous YSR Congress party administration to alleviate the financial strain on the debt-burdened state. Naidu met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi for the first time since Andhra Pradesh received a significant boost in the Union Budget. As a key ally in the BJP-led NDA government, the TDP has been vocal about the state’s fiscal challenges and has been pushing for increased central assistance. A senior TDP leader revealed that Naidu asked Modi if the Reserve Bank of India could assist in rescheduling the loans, which would provide some relief from the state's immediate debt repayment obligations. Naidu also expressed gratitude to Modi for the budgetary allocations, including ₹15,000 crore for the development of the new capital city Amaravati and the Polavaram project. Later, Naidu met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, highlighting Andhra Pradesh’s dire financial situation and requesting enhanced support under various schemes for the state's reconstruction. Official data indicates that Andhra Pradesh's public debt has increased from 31.02 percent of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in 2019-20 to 33.32 percent in 2023-24, reflecting a deteriorating fiscal health over the past five years. Naidu also discussed state matters with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
