Janhit: India-China Relations Reboot? PM Modi and Xi Hold Crucial Talks at SCO | ABP NEWS

ABP News Bureau   |  01 Sep 2025 10:28 AM (IST)

In a significant diplomatic development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit held in Tianjin, China. The meeting, the first in 10 months and the first on Chinese soil in seven years, focused on resetting ties strained by the Galwan Valley clash. Both leaders emphasized moving beyond the bitter past and working towards mutual cooperation for the benefit of 2.8 billion people in both nations. Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of India-China relations being viewed independently, not through the lens of third-party nations. Xi Jinping, on the other hand, stressed that border disputes should not overshadow bilateral ties. The meeting was closely watched globally, especially as the summit also saw the presence of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. While no bilateral meeting took place between Modi and Sharif, their presence on the same platform post the Pulwama-Balakot standoff was symbolically important. Back home, opposition leaders like Akhilesh Yadav criticized Modi's visit, citing concerns about China’s past betrayals and economic infiltration. However, the ruling NDA defended the visit, calling it a necessary step in India's evolving foreign policy amidst shifting global alliances. Additionally, tensions between India and the U.S. surfaced, with reports suggesting that U.S. President Donald Trump imposed extra tariffs on India due to Modi’s refusal to endorse his Nobel nomination claim. As the global order reshapes, India appears to be balancing traditional alliances with emerging strategic partnerships.
