Breaking News: 2018 FAA Advisory Ignored? Ahmedabad Crash Renews Questions on Air Safety Oversight | ABP NEWS

ABP News Bureau   |  12 Jul 2025 11:51 AM (IST)

The preliminary investigation into the June 12 Ahmedabad plane crash has revealed critical findings that raise serious concerns about safety procedures and oversight. The aircraft, which crashed just 32 seconds after takeoff, plummeted into a medical college hostel in Meghaninagar. Out of all passengers, only one—Vishwas Kumar Ramesh—survived. The report indicates that both fuel control switches moved to the "cut-off" position within one second, cutting fuel supply to the engines and causing an immediate dual engine failure. A conversation between the two pilots, captured in the cockpit voice recorder, shows confusion—one pilot questioned why the switches were off, while the other denied switching them off. Experts point out that these are not easily toggled switches; they include a safety lock mechanism. Despite a 2018 FAA advisory highlighting potential issues with these switches, it wasn’t categorized as mandatory, so Air India did not act on it. This has raised concerns about whether the tragedy could have been avoided had stricter enforcement occurred. While weather and bird activity have been ruled out, the report hints at a possible lapse in cockpit situational awareness. Investigators will continue examining technical data and audio recordings to determine the final cause.
