A 38-year-old German tourist was apprehended on Thursday after scaling the centuries-old pyramid, El Castillo, at the ancient Mayan site of Chichen Itza. The incident occurred during the renowned "Descent of Kukulcan" phenomenon, which marks the arrival of the spring equinox and attracts thousands of visitors annually.
According to Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the tourist trespassed into a restricted area around 5 p.m. and ascended the pyramid’s steps. Security personnel stationed at the western side of the structure attempted to intervene. “He escaped from our grasp, even though we're keeping watch on the western side of the castle. He ran past us. He's clearly in good physical condition,” one security agent told Mexico Daily News.
The reckless act angered the assembled crowd, who jeered and recorded the incident on their mobile phones. A security guard chased the tourist up the stairs, while other officials rushed around the base in an attempt to capture him. After reaching the top and momentarily disappearing from view, the man was eventually escorted down the eastern side to avoid further escalation with the incensed onlookers.

Despite the efforts of INAH personnel and National Guard officers to maintain order, the crowd lashed out at the tourist, physically assaulting him. According to witnesses, he suffered a blow to the forehead, leaving him bloodied. “Ms. Arroyo managed to also record the moment the man was swarmed by other tourists who relentlessly chased him.”
Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988 and one of the World’s New Seven Wonders, strictly prohibits climbing the pyramid to preserve its structural integrity. The rule has been enforced since 2006, ensuring the protection of the historical monument. The equinox event, featuring the illusion of a serpent slithering down the pyramid’s steps through the play of light and shadow, is one of the most highly anticipated spectacles at the site.
While officials removed the German tourist from the premises, the incident underscores the importance of respecting heritage sites and adhering to local regulations to prevent damage and ensure public safety.
