New Delhi: Amidst the skyrocketing tomato prices, a leader of Telangana's ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) on Monday distributed it for free to women on Telangana minister and KCR's son KT Rama Rao's 47th birthday.

While speaking to PTI, Rajanala Srihari, a BRS leader in Warangal, said that he distributed a basket, each containing one-and-half kilograms of tomatoes, to about 250-300 women at Chowrasta Centre in the city.

In the video shared by Dial News on Twitter, long lines of men and women are seen in front of a large table where tomatoes have been kept inside pink plastic baskets. Notably, pink is the BRS' official colour.

Last year, Srihari was in the news after he distributed whiskey and chicken to 200 party workers on the occasion of 'Dussehra.'

Srihari told PTI that he wishes to see Rama Rao become Telangana Chief Minister one day.

Rama Rao, son of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and a minister in the Telangana Cabinet, is successfully getting industrial investments to the state leading to employment generation on a large scale, he said.

Meanwhile, the government's agricultural marketing company National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India Ltd (NCCF) today began selling tomatoes at a subsidised rate of Rs 70 per kg through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), news agency ANI reported.

Anice Joseph Chandra, Managing Director, NCCF told ANI that "We have partnered with ONDC for sale of tomatoes in Delhi NCR."

Consumers can place their orders from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm daily and the delivery will be made the next day. “There will be doorstep delivery at no extra cost to the consumer,” she said.

Chandra said that tomatoes will be made available through buyers' app listed at ONDC such as Paytm, Magicpin, Mystore, and Pincode to begin with.
