Hyderabad: The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) won all six seats in the Legislative Council from local authority constituencies in the biennial elections.
The TRS's six candidates were all elected with large margins in first-preference votes, putting an end to the aspirations of some independent candidates backed by opposition parties who were counting on cross-voting.
The polling was held for two seats in the Karimnagar district and one each in the Nalgonda, Khammam, Karimnagar, Adilabad and Medak seats. A total of 5,326 voters were eligible to cast their votes, while 26 candidates were in the fray.
In the Karimnagar district, TRS won both seats.TRS candidate Bhanu Prasad won in Karimnagar-1 and another candidate L Ramana won in Karimnagar-2 seats.
In Karimnagar, 1,320 votes were cast, out of 1,324 total. For a candidate to win the election, the magic number was 441. Bhanu Prasad got 585 votes, while Ramana received 479 votes.
TRS candidate Kotireddy was elected from the Nalgonda district. Koti Reddy got 917 votes in the first preference vote, while independent candidate Nagesh got 226 votes. A total of 1,233 votes were cast, election officials said.
In the Khammam district, T Madhusudhan of the TRS was elected with a majority of 238 votes. The ruling party candidate received 480 votes, while the candidate of the opposition Congress received 242 votes.
Madhava Reddy of the TRS was elected to the Medak District Council with a majority of 524 votes. The ruling party's nominee received 762 votes, while the Congress contender received only 238 votes.
TRS candidate won a solid victory in the joint Adilabad district local body MLC elections.TRS candidate Dande Vithal won the seat by 667 votes over his nearest challenger, independent candidate Pushpa Rani. Vithal received 742 out of 860 total votes cast, while Pushpa Rani, whom the opposing parties sponsored, received only 75 votes.
Last month, the Election Commission had issued notification for election to six seats of the Council from local authority constituencies.
