In a tragic incident, five children and a man drowned in Malkaram lake at Jawaharnagar of the Medchal-Malkajgiri district in Telangana. The police recovered six bodies from the lake on Saturday (November 5). According to the reports, five students of a madrasa in Hyderabad's Amberpet, along with their teacher attended an event in Jawaharnagar.


Later the teacher, took the students on a small tour of the town and the lake which was in the neighbourhood. The children saw the lake and got into it without realising the depth and a child accidentally drowned.


The police suspect that the teacher along with his other students might have tried to rescue the child and despite their efforts, they got drowned. "The dead bodies of six people were recovered. Five children and a teacher were among the dead. It seems that the deceased students were aged between 12-14 years," Jawaharnagar Inspector K Chandra Sekhar said as quoted by The New Minute.


Police have registered a case and the probe is still on. The victims' bodies have been shifted to Gandhi Hospital. According to the locals, there was no fence put up by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) around the lake. The development works of the lake were taken up by the GHMC.

In May, two brothers accidentally drowned in the same lake. A report in The New Indian Express said that the victims' father took them to the lake and the children accidentally drowned in their father's absence.


After the incident, The Telangana State Commission for Protection of requesting Child Rights (TSCPCR) noted the incident and a petition from the victims' parents requesting safety measures for the existing lakes of Jawaharnagar in the Medchal-Malkajgiri district.
