Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to attend the 'Mukti Diwas' celebration in Telangana's Hyderabad district on Sunday. The day commemorates the princely state of Hyderabad merging into India on September 17, 1948. On Sunday, the Home Minister will pay tribute to the brave soldiers who fought against the Nizam's army and the Razakars.

The Home Minister will also hoist the national flag at the parade ground event. While BJP has been trying to announce 'Mukti Diwas' as an official day of celebration, TRS observes the day as "National Unity Day". AIMIM also celebrates the day to mark unity.

Meanwhile, Telangana BJP president Kishan Reddy on Friday slammed Congress and BRS for not officially celebrating 'Mukti Diwas" during their tenure. Addressing at Parkal in Hanumakonda district, he said, the Congress did not celebrate the 'liberation day' due to the "fear of Muslims and Majlis" (AIMIM) when it was in power in undivided Andhra Pradesh for long.

He asserted that if the Congress wanted to hold a meeting, the "Gandhi-Nehru family" should assume responsibility for not marking the day at the Bhagya Lakshmi temple next to Charminar.

Reddy claimed that Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao requested an official commemoration of the day during the Telangana agitation but did not follow through after assuming office.

The visit of Amit Shah also comes as Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi will attend ‘Vijaya Bheri’ public rally in Telangana on September 17. During the meeting, Sonia Gandhi is expected to announce the guarantees for the state for Telangana Assembly Elections.

The Telangana Assembly Elections are scheduled to take place by the end of the year. Congress, BJP and regional party BRS have locked horns to win the battle.
