The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested Butchi Babu Gorantla, a Hyderabad-based Chartered Accountant, for his alleged role in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi excise policy.
CBI officials said that Gorantla was arrested for his alleged role in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy and thereby causing wrongful gain to Hyderabad-based wholesale and retail licensees and their beneficial owners under the Delhi Excise Policy for the years 2021–22.
Butchi Babu will be produced in court later in the day. The CBI said that they will seek his custodial remand in the matter. The CBI had questioned BRS Leader Kavitha, the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, in connection with the case in December last year.
The ED, which filed its first chargesheet on November 25, mentioned that Vijay Nair, one of the accused, received Rs 100 crore kickbacks on behalf of AAP leaders from the "South Group", being controlled by several persons, including KCR's daughter.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia is also one of the accused in the case. The case came to light after Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena sought a CBI probe into alleged corruption.
The CBI has alleged that many ineligible vendors were awarded licences by the Delhi government in exchange for bribes. The policy, introduced in November last year, was withdrawn eight months later.
However, Sisodia's name did not figure in the first chargesheet filed by the CBI in connection with the excise policy case. In its chargesheet, the CBI named arrested businessmen Vijay Nair and Abhishek Boinpally and five other accused.
