New Delhi: In line with its inappropriate content policy, Twitter has announced it will ban misleading ads that go against the scientific consensus on climate change. According to the micro blogging site, climate denialism should not be monetised on the platform and that misleading information about climate change can undermine efforts to protect the planet. However, the announcement did not elaborate on whether Twitter would delete or block the accounts of users who post climate change misinformation.
"We believe that climate denialism shouldn’t be monetized on Twitter, and that misrepresentative ads shouldn’t detract from important conversations about the climate crisis. This approach is informed by authoritative sources, like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment Reports," Seán Boyle, Director of Sustainability and Casey Junod, Global Sustainability Manager at Twitter wrote in a blog post.
Twitter also acknowledged that misleading information about climate change can undermine efforts to protect the planet. In the coming months, the company will share details of its work to add reliable, authoritative context to the climate conversations happening on the platform.
"We continue to accelerate our sustainability efforts, and we’re laser-focused on reducing our own carbon footprint. Through targeted work, we’ve lowered our emissions for the second straight year – even as the company grew," Junod and Boyle added.
Earlier this year, Twitter joined the EU climate pact, committing to ambitious North Star and Pathway pledges.
