New Delhi: Swedish caller identification giant Truecaller on Thursday introduced Truecaller 12 for Android users in India after weeks of testing, which brings call recording features and a significant design overhaul to the interface. The features will be rolled out to all Android users in India in the coming weeks and a global rollout will follow soon.

As part of the interface overhaul, Truecaller 12 also brings separate tabs for calls and SMS. With separate tabs, users will get to all of their SMS, Truecaller Group Chats and individual chats in a tap. Paid users in the country will also get access to Ghost Call and Call Announce features.

Highlighting that India is an important market for the company, Rishit Jhunjhunwala, Chief Product Officer & MD, Truecaller India told ABP Live during a virtual conference: "India, of course, being our biggest focus, we create features that are specifically for India. Features like the blocking capabilities are only in India, specifically, the 140 series telemarketing numbers."

Truecaller 12 integrates the Video Caller ID feature that lets users set a short video that plays automatically when they call friends and family. Truecaller has also integrated a call recording feature to record incoming and outgoing calls. However, Ghost Call will only be available to Truecaller Premium and Gold subscribers.

Recording was initially introduced as a premium-only feature but it is now available for all Android users provided they are using devices running Android 5.1 and newer. With this feature, users can record all incoming and outgoing calls irrespective of the device manufacturer. The company informed that all recordings are stored locally on the device storage and cannot be accessed by Truecaller.

“Truecaller is a vital part of communication for over 22 crore Indians, for both their professional and personal needs. All these new features will allow people to enjoy and exercise greater control over their communication, offering a safe, and fulfilling experience at the same time," Jhunjhunwala added.

A feature called 'Ghost call' can be used by setting up any name, number and photo to pretend you are getting a call from that person.

"If you prefer, you can also just choose a contact from your phonebook. If you would like to receive the Ghost call at a later time, you can schedule it," the company said.
