Sam Altman-led OpenAI launched a text-to-video generation tool powered by artificial intelligence (AI), Sora, on Monday. We did get a trailer of Sora a few months back when Altman shared a few videos created by this tool, and now it has finally been made live for users. The tool went live only for the people who paid for ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription however, due to strong demand, the service had to be paused. The services are expected to resume soon.

Let us go over the details, including the key features of Sora, to know what it is in detail.

What Is Sora?

Sora is an innovative tool designed to create short, high-resolution videos from text prompts, with the added functionality for users to integrate their own visual assets for customization and blending. OpenAI first launched Sora in February, initially restricting its use to a select group of artists, designers, and filmmakers, who later shared their imaginative creations in March.

The advanced version, Sora Turbo, has now been made available to ChatGPT users worldwide. However, this rollout excludes users in certain regions, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area, which encompasses EU countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, participants in the EU’s single market.

OpenAI posted on X, “Our holiday gift to you is here: Sora is here. We hope that this early version of Sora will help people explore new forms of creativity.”

Sora Turbo enables users to produce videos in high definition, supporting resolutions up to 1080p and durations of up to 20 seconds. These creations can be formatted in wide-screen, vertical, or square aspect ratios. The platform features an eclectic mix of sample videos, ranging from lifelike depictions, such as a bustling urban setting or a serene snowy landscape, to fantastical concepts. Highlights include a mouth brimming with tiny blossoms or a rocket soaring with colorful streamers instead of flames, set against a playful, cartoon-style ocean scene.

How To Access Sora Turbo

To access this feature, users need a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription. The Plus plan costs $20 per month (roughly Rs 1,700), while the Pro plan is priced at $200 per month (approximately Rs 17,000). Both plans include the AI tool at no extra cost.

The Pro plan offers significantly enhanced benefits, such as 10 times more usage, support for higher resolutions, and extended video durations. OpenAI has also announced plans to introduce customised pricing options for different user categories early next year.
