Samsung recently unveiled some fresh capabilities of Galaxy AI at the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event. The head of Samsung's Mobile Division, TM Roh. right after the presentation confirmed the launch of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Bixby by the end of this year. According to a report by CNBC, Roh said, “We’re going to advance Bixby with the application of Gen AI technology.”

This is not the first time that we have heard about the upgraded Bixby in fact, earlier at the first Samsung Unpacked event of this year, the launch of an improved Bixby was talked about. As per the information provided then, it was slated to be part of the Galaxy AI initiative.

This news becomes important because many tech giants are incorporating AI in their devices now to stay in the race. Apple recently at its WWDC event made the announcement of ChatGPT-powered Siri by Apple. This in a way became like a testament that most smartphone makers will sooner or later bring generative AI features into their personal assistants.

Bixby's History

Samsung introduced Bixby in 2017 alongside the Galaxy S8 series, going so far as to include a dedicated physical button on some devices to activate the assistant. Despite these efforts, Bixby struggled to gain traction and failed to achieve the impact Samsung had hoped for, especially when compared to the more feature-rich Google Assistant.

The revamped version of Bixby is anticipated to be a key component of the upcoming OneUI 7 update, which will be based on the Android 15 OS. This update is expected to be officially announced during the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2024, scheduled for October 3. Notably, the new Bixby will likely not be restricted to the latest devices; it is expected to be compatible with at least two generations of Samsung Galaxy S and Z series smartphones. This broader compatibility could potentially help Bixby finally gain the user base and functionality that Samsung originally envisioned.
