Paris Games Begin: Google marked the start of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics with a special animated Doodle, celebrating the event's commencement later today. For the first time, the opening ceremony will take place not in a stadium but along the iconic Seine River, with thousands of athletes participating in the parade from boats. Even the London Olympics 2012 featured the Thames River heavily in certain sequences, but this time around, the entire ceremony will unfold on the waters, surely making it a spectacle to behold for years to come.

This is how the official Pais Olympics website explains what the opening ceremony will be like:

"Taking on a new guise, the parade of athletes will be held on the Seine with boats for each national delegation. These boats will be equipped with cameras to allow television and online viewers to see the athletes up close. Winding their way from east to west, the 10,500 athletes will cross through the centre of Paris, the overall playing field for the Games on which these competitors will display their sporting prowess over the next 16 days. The parade will come to the end of its 6-kilometre route in front of the Trocadéro, where the remaining elements of Olympic protocol and final shows will take place."

Today's festivities will begin with a speech from the host nation's leader, followed by a parade featuring athletes from over 200 countries. The lighting of the cauldron capped off the celebrations. The Paris Olympics will see competitors in 329 events across 32 sports disciplines, running until August 11.

This edition of the Summer Games introduces four new sports: breaking, skateboarding, surfing, and sports climbing, alongside the 28 traditional events.
