OpenAI, a leader in generative artificial intelligence, has unveiled "Deep Research," a sophisticated AI tool designed to conduct comprehensive, multi-step research tasks on the web. The tool, which debuted on Sunday, aims to assist users with intricate research requirements by independently gathering, analysing, and synthesising information from various online sources.

It should be noted that Indian users - free or premium - are yet to get the Deep Research update on ChatGPT. Once it arrives, you will be able to access the tool via the regular ChatGPT chat page only.

Advanced Research Capabilities

Deep Research leverages an upcoming version of the OpenAI o3 model optimised for web browsing and data analysis. The AI agent can process vast amounts of text, images, and PDFs to deliver detailed reports at a level comparable to a professional research analyst. With built-in reasoning capabilities, the tool pivots and adapts to the information it encounters, allowing it to tackle dynamic research challenges.

OpenAI highlighted that Deep Research is particularly useful for sectors such as finance, science, engineering, and policy-making, as well as for consumers seeking personalised recommendations for high-investment purchases like vehicles and home appliances. The output includes clear citations and summaries, making it easy to verify findings.

How Does Deep Research Work?

To use Deep Research, users select the tool in ChatGPT’s interface and input their query, which may range from competitive market analyses to consumer product comparisons. Users can attach additional files to provide context. Once the research begins, a sidebar displays progress updates and sources.

Depending on the complexity, the tool may take between 5 to 30 minutes to generate a comprehensive report. OpenAI plans to introduce enhancements such as embedded images, visual data representations, and additional analytic insights in the coming weeks.

Gradual Rollout & Availability

Currently, Deep Research is available for Pro users via ChatGPT on the web. It will expand to mobile and desktop versions by February. OpenAI intends to extend access to Plus, Team, and Enterprise users, with a future version optimised for faster, cost-effective performance.

The company is also working to bring the service to international markets, including the UK and Switzerland.

Limitations & Future Plans

OpenAI acknowledged that Deep Research remains in its early development phase and may occasionally present inaccuracies, struggle to distinguish between credible information and rumours or misrepresent uncertainty. Nevertheless, the company is optimistic about refining these aspects through rigorous testing and user feedback.

The launch of Deep Research follows OpenAI’s January introduction of another AI tool, Operator, which assists users with task management, including to-do lists and vacation planning. Looking ahead, OpenAI aims to integrate these agents for more seamless and advanced task execution within ChatGPT.

This latest development marks a significant step toward OpenAI’s vision of building AI capable of producing novel insights and supporting complex problem-solving in both professional and personal contexts.
