Netflix has announced its decision to discontinue support for certain older generations of Apple TVs. As reported by Apple Insider, stating that the company has begun notifying its customers via email. The move, according to Netflix, aims to uphold the quality of the Netflix viewing experience.

As per the Netflix Support page, as of July 31, 2024, the streaming service will no longer be accessible on Apple TV (2nd generation) and Apple TV (3rd generation). These models have been deemed "obsolete" by Apple, which has consequently ceased servicing the hardware, seven years after its discontinuation from the market.

Support Halted For Samsung, Vizio As Well

Notably, this action from Netflix extends beyond Apple TVs, as the streaming giant has also halted support for older television models from Samsung and Vizio.

The Apple TV (2nd generation), introduced in 2010, offers a resolution of 720p, while its successor, the 3rd generation released in 2012, supports 1080p resolution. These models did not operate on tvOS or have a dedicated app store; instead, they came pre-loaded with select applications.

For users currently utilising either of these two Apple TV models, an upgrade will be necessary to continue accessing Netflix content post-July 31. Alternatively, users can switch to a compatible smart TV from various brands such as Samsung, TCL, LG, Sony, Vizio, Hisense, among others.

For those encountering the message, “Please update your device. This version is no longer supported by Netflix,” an update of the software is imperative to retain Netflix accessibility.
