Meta-owned Instagram Threads app achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 200 million users, as announced by Adam Mosseri, a top company executive. This achievement closely follows company CEO Mark Zuckerberg's statement during the company's earnings call, where he mentioned that Threads was on the verge of reaching this user count.


Threads' Growth Smaller Compaed To Meta's Other Apps


Although Threads' user base is considerably smaller compared to Meta's other platforms, its growth rate has been remarkably rapid. Last month, as the app celebrated its first anniversary, and Zuckerberg reported 175 million users. He has repeatedly expressed optimism about Threads potentially becoming Meta's next app to reach one billion users.

"We've been building this company for 20 years, and there just are not that many opportunities that come around to grow a billion-person app," Zuckerberg stated. "Obviously, there's a ton of work between now and there."


Expanding the app's user base is crucial for Meta's future plans to monetise Instagram Threads, which currently lacks advertisements or a business model.


Zuckerberg further explained: "All these new products, we ship them, and then there's a multi-year time horizon between scaling them and then scaling them into not just consumer experiences but very large businesses."

While Threads has benefited from the turbulence surrounding X, formerly Twitter, Meta is still determining how to position the app, which is widely perceived as an alternative to X. Both Mosseri and Zuckerberg have expressed a desire to avoid promoting political content to users who don't explicitly request it. This stance has reportedly raised questions among some Meta employees, according to The Information.


The app's "for you" algorithm has been criticised for its slow response to breaking news and current events. Mosseri has acknowledged this issue, stating on Threads, "We're definitely not fast enough yet, and we're actively working to get better there."
