In a significant step boosting the "Making AI in India" and "Making AI Work for India", the Narendra Modi government on Thursday (March 7) gave a go-ahead to comprehensive national-level IndiaAI Mission, which aims to harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for the country's development. Union minister Piyush Goyal made the announcement in a cabinet briefing.
The IndiaAI Mission gets a substantial budget allocation of Rs 10,371.92 crore, highlighting the government's commitment to promoting AI-driven initiatives and innovation across various sectors. This initiative underscores the importance of leveraging AI technologies to address societal challenges, drive economic growth, and propel India towards becoming a global leader in AI research, development, and application.
The IndiaAI Mission aims to create a comprehensive ecosystem that gives way to AI innovation through strategic initiatives and collaborations spanning public and private sectors.
Through initiatives such as democratising access to computing, enhancing data reliability, nurturing local AI expertise, attracting top talent, fostering industry cooperation, facilitating startup funding, promoting socially beneficial AI projects, and reinforcing ethical standards, it will foster responsible and inclusive expansion within India's AI ecosystem.
The IndiaAI Mission, now approved by the Centre, is set to drive innovation and cultivate domestic capabilities, safeguarding India's technological independence. Additionally, it will generate numerous high-skilled job opportunities, leveraging the country's demographic advantage. By showcasing how AI can be utilised for societal benefits and bolstering its global competitiveness, the IndiaAI Mission is set to position India as a leader in harnessing transformative technologies.
The implementation of the Mission will be overseen by the IndiaAI Independent Business Division (IBD) within the Digital India Corporation (DIC), as confirmed by an official, says a media release. The IndiaAI Mission is poised to drive innovation and foster domestic capabilities.
The IndiaAI Innovation Centre will undertake the development and deployment of indigenous Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) and domain-specific foundational models in critical sectors, the release added.
