Google Maps has regularly brought updates and new features to enhance the user experience. The app was appreciated widely when it added a satellite view and full-screen menu, however, now the app is working to replace the full-screen menu interface with a sheet-based design which will keep the map in view at all times. Google is now rolling out this new feature in Maps globally. The new design features softer, more rounded corners and a greater emphasis on the background layer, showcasing the map in a better way.
This change in design layout not just helps in maintaining context while navigating but it also gives Google Maps a sleeker, more lightweight appearance.
Google Maps New Interface: How Will It Make A Difference
This redesign aims to enhance the user experience by keeping the map visible at all times, simplifying interactions, and making information easier to understand. Let's break down the details. With the new sheet-based interface, users can always see map details like location, route, and surrounding landmarks. Previously, users had to switch back and forth to check these details, obstructing the map view.
The new interface allows quick access to commonly used options, such as selecting a transportation mode or route variations. Now, by sliding up from the bottom of the screen, users can access these options without cluttering the main map display.
The updated design also highlights key journey details, like departure and arrival points, within simplified sheets. This prioritises the most important navigation information and streamlines the travel experience.
Currently, the sheet-based design is rolling out gradually for Android users on the stable channel of the Google Maps app (version 11.36.x). Although there are no plans revealed for iOS yet, it is expected to be available soon.
