New Delhi: Vodafone Idea, one of the country's top telecom companies, claimed to have recorded a high speed of 3.7 gigabits per second (Gbps) during the 5G trial yesterday. This is the highest speed achieved by any operator in India. Vodafone Idea recorded a download speed of 1.5 Gbps in the mid-band spectrum in Gandhinagar and Pune.
Highest Speed Achieved So Far
For a 5G network trial, Vodafone Idea (Vi) has been allocated traditional 3.5 GHz spectrum bands as well as high-frequency bands like 26 gigahertz (GHz) by the Department of Telecom. In Pune, Vodafone India has established its 5G trial in the lab set-up of Cloud Core, the new generation Transport and Radio Access Network.
A statement from the company said that in this 5G trial, it has achieved a top speed of more than 3.7 Gbps with very low latency on the mmWave (millimetre wave) spectrum band.
'Pleased With Good Results': Vodafone Chief Technology Officer
Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer of Vodafone Idea, said, "We are pleased with the speed and latency results in the initial levels of the 5G trial on the government allocated 5G spectrum bands."
He added that having established a strong 4G network across the country, delivering the fastest 4G speeds and 5G ready network, Vi is now testing the next generation's 5G technology to provide the best digital experience for enterprises and consumers in India, in the future.
Four months ago, the Department of Telecommunications had approved Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone for 5G trial and later it approved MTNL as well. These telecom operators have been granted six-month trials with telecom gear manufacturers Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and C-DOT. Reliance Jio has claimed to bring 5G by next year.
