Dell is alerting customers about a data breach following a threat actor's claim of stealing information for roughly 49 million customers, the media has reported. The computer major initiated the process of sending out data breach notifications to its customers yesterday, indicating that a Dell portal housing customer information regarding purchases had been compromised, says a reort by Bleeping Computer.
No Financial Details Leaked: Claims, Dell
According to Dell, the threat actor accessed the following information during the breach:
- Name
- Physical address
- Dell hardware and order details, such as service tag, item description, order date, and associated warranty information

The tech giant mentioned that the stolen information does not include financial or payment details, email addresses, or phone numbers. They are actively collaborating with law enforcement and a third-party forensics firm to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
Threat Actor Menelik Tried To Sell Dell Database On Breach Forums
Initially spotted by Daily Dark Web, a threat actor named Menelik purportedly attempted to sell a Dell database on the Breach Forums hacking forum on April 28th. The threat actor claimed to have acquired data from the computer manufacturer for "49 million customers and other information systems purchased from Dell between 2017 and 2024."

In an email spotted by TechCrunch and circulated by several users on Reddit, the computer manufacturer stated that it was probing "an incident concerning a Dell portal housing a database containing select types of customer information associated with purchases made from Dell."
In the message, the company downplayed the impact of the breach. “We believe there is not a significant risk to our customers given the type of information involved,” Dell wrote in the email, as per the TechCrunch report.
