During his recent trip to China, billionaire Elon Musk revealed that the Chinese government intends to introduce regulations for artificial intelligence (AI). Musk mentioned this development during a Twitter Space conversation with Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr, Reuters reports. Although he did not provide further details, Musk stated that he had productive discussions with senior Chinese officials regarding the risks associated with AI and the necessity for oversight and regulation.

Reuters attempted to reach out to Chinese officials for comment but was unable to do so outside of regular business hours. Musk concluded his two-day trip to China on Thursday, during which he held meetings with several high-ranking government officials, including the highest-ranking vice premier. In Beijing, he met with China's foreign, commerce, and industry ministers.

Additionally, a source familiar with the matter revealed that Musk had a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang on Wednesday, as reported by Reuters.

China has previously taken steps towards AI regulation. In April, the country's cyberspace regulator released draft measures for managing generative AI services. The proposed measures require companies to undergo security assessments by authorities before launching their AI offerings to the public.

Governments around the world are considering ways to address the potential risks associated with AI, which has gained significant investment and consumer popularity in recent months, particularly following the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT.

In China, the Cyberspace Administration (CAC) has expressed support for AI innovation and application while emphasising the importance of aligning generative AI content with the country's core socialist values.

The CAC also highlighted the responsibility of providers to ensure the legitimacy of data used in training generative AI products and urged measures to prevent algorithmic discrimination during the design and training process.
