New Delhi: Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday announced the launch of an artificial intelligence firm - xA to “understand the true nature of the universe”.

"Announcing formation of @xAI to understand reality," Musk said in a tweet on Wednesday.

Musk announced the formation of the AI startup with the launch of its website, unveiling a team made up of engineers who have worked at companies from Alphabet-owned Google to Microsoft and OpenAI.

The website said that xAI will hold a Twitter Spaces event on July 14.

According to news agency Reuters, the startup will be led by Musk who has said on several occasions that the development of AI should be paused and that the sector needs regulation.

“Our team is led by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. We have previously worked at DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto…We have worked on and led the development of some of the largest breakthroughs in the field including AlphaStar, AlphaCode, Inception, Minerva, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4," read an excerpt from the newly launched x.ai website.

While the company is a separate entity from X Corp, it said that xAI would “work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission".

According to a Nevada state filing, Musk registered a firm named X.AI Corp in March. The firm lists Musk as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk's family office, as a secretary.

According to a Bloomberg report, the Financial Times in April reported that Musk was holding discussions with Tesla Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. investors about helping fund an AI startup, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter. The billionaire has acquired thousands of processors from Nvidia Corp. for the new project, the paper said.
