Elon Musk, the eccentric billionaire owner of X (formerly Twitter), has been known to call out people for cage fights on the platform (including calling Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg a 'cuck'). Now, he wants X users to play nice. On December 29, Musk took to Twitter and made a simple request:
The tweet comes at a time when Musk took a firm stand in the ongoing H-1B visa row. Musk, who has been tapped by US President-elect Donald Trump to lead the proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), urged critics to “take a big step back” in the ongoing immigration dispute.
Musk’s passionate remarks included a promise to "go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend," emphasising his strong stance on the matter. The H-1B visa programme, crucial for skilled professionals from abroad, has been a significant pathway for immigrants, with a large portion of beneficiaries being Indian nationals.
The controversy gained momentum after Trump appointed Indian-American entrepreneur Sriram Krishnan as Senior Policy Advisor for artificial intelligence (AI) at the White House. Krishnan, an advocate for removing green card caps, has faced criticism from Trump’s right-wing base, particularly among Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporters, who have voiced opposition to immigration policies.
Musk made a series of tweets to drive home the point. Just an example below:
Musk’s defence of immigrants and his criticism of MAGA loyalists is particularly striking given his close association with Trump. A key ally of the President-elect, Musk played a pivotal role in Trump’s re-election campaign, leveraging his influence to help secure one of the most remarkable political comebacks in US history.
Trump is set to take office on January 20, marking a new chapter in the administration’s policies and priorities.
It seems that for now, Musk, who is known to get easily off-hinged when it comes to tweets, is taking a (nicer) turn. Will we see a more responsible Musk on X in 2025? Only time will tell.
How Did Netizens React?
Musk's dedicated followers on X responded to the Dogefather's request for "positive" and "beautiful" content with some delectable tweets.
Of course, there were some dissidents as well, including a certain celebrity cat from 10 Downing Street:
