ChatGPT Down: On Wednesday, September 18, numerous users encountered difficulties while attempting to access OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT. Many took to social media platforms to express their frustration, noting that both the mobile application and website were unresponsive.
According to the outage tracker Downdetector, approximately 200 reports of the issue were logged around 8:30 am. The data indicated that 79 per cent of users experienced a complete service interruption, while about 16 per cent faced problems specifically with the website, and 5 per cent reported issues with the ChatGPT mobile app.
Despite the widespread reports of outages, OpenAI has not yet issued an official statement regarding the situation.
Interestingly, the OpenAI status page indicated that ChatGPT was operational at the time of writing. However, the company acknowledged that the Workspace Analytics tab was malfunctioning for some ChatGPT Enterprise users. An update on the status page noted, "We have restored data for a portion of affected users and are continuing to work diligently to resolve the issue for the remaining users."

Patience is Key
If you can load the ChatGPT website but the chatbot does not respond to prompts, it might be a temporary outage. Users often encounter an "Internal Server Error" message during peak times, but sometimes, the service simply fails to respond. In such cases, waiting a couple of hours may resolve the issue. Additionally, if you’ve reached the prompt limit, you may also want to consider ChatGPT Plus, which offers priority access.
Check Your Internet Connection
A malfunctioning internet connection could also be the culprit. To diagnose this, try accessing other websites. If they don’t load, the problem is likely with your connection. Restarting your router is a good starting point. Conversely, if other sites load fine but ChatGPT does not, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data might help. If you’re using a VPN, try disconnecting it, as ChatGPT may block certain IP addresses to prevent abuse.
Re-Logging In
If you’ve had ChatGPT open for an extended period, it might be beneficial to log out and back in. Sessions can expire, and since an active OpenAI account is necessary for functionality, this could restore access. The “Log out” option is available in the bottom left corner of the screen.
Use Incognito Mode/Different Browser
For users facing persistent issues, opening ChatGPT in incognito mode can help determine if browser settings are causing problems. Alternatively, switching to a different web browser might bypass issues related to extensions or scripts interfering with the site.

While clearing cache and browser settings can resolve the issue, users should be aware that it will log them out of all sites, requiring re-entry of credentials. For those who prefer not to clear all data, selectively managing cache and settings might also work.

OpenAI recently introduced a dedicated ChatGPT app for both Android and iOS, offering another avenue to access the chatbot. This could be a viable solution if the web version continues to falter.
