ChatGPT Down: OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform faced a major disruption on Wednesday morning, marking its second major outage in just a few weeks. Thousands of users across the globe, including those in India, reported issues ranging from being unable to log in to encountering blank screens and non-responsive interfaces. However, OpenAI has now confirmed that a mitigation has been applied and recovery is underway.
The outage affected not just ChatGPT but also OpenAI’s GPT API, Sora, and Codex, services widely used by developers, researchers, and enterprise clients. Reports of failure began surfacing shortly after 6:10 AM IST, with Downdetector recording a sharp spike in complaints.
OpenAI Confirms 'Degraded Performance', Fix in Progress
OpenAI’s official status page acknowledged the disruption early in the morning, noting that multiple services were impacted. “We have identified elevated error rates and are working on a mitigation,” the company said in its initial update.
By 9:11 AM IST, OpenAI shared a follow-up stating that mitigation efforts had been implemented and recovery was being closely monitored. The update offers some relief to users who were left unable to access key services during peak working hours.
Most Users Locked Out of ChatGPT
An estimated 88 per cent of user complaints were specifically related to ChatGPT being completely inaccessible. The remaining issues involved failed API calls and outages in Sora and Codex tools. Users from North America, Europe, and Asia all reported similar experiences, indicating a widespread and cross-regional impact.
This incident echoes a similar outage earlier this month, leading to growing concerns over the platform’s stability, especially as AI adoption accelerates globally.
What to Do If You’re Affected
While OpenAI works toward full recovery, the company has advised users to follow a few key steps:
- Avoid repeated login attempts to prevent triggering security locks.
- Check the OpenAI status page regularly for the latest updates.
- Save any important work externally to avoid data loss during service interruptions.
Although mitigation steps are in place, users are still advised to remain cautious until full service is officially restored. As demand for generative AI tools continues to surge, all eyes will be on OpenAI to ensure its infrastructure can keep up without repeated disruptions.
