New Delhi: Koo, India’s multi-lingual multi-blogging platform, believes it has something that Chinese or American social media apps lack, and that it’s a platform that makes people feel their opinion matters.


In an interview with ABP, Koo co-founder Mayank Bidawatka talked about the app, its growing presence in India, the expansion plans, and a lot more.


According to Bidawatka, in a broader context, Koo is an inclusive platform where one can express one’s opinion on any matter and others can react and counter-comment on that. If seen in comparison with social media platform Twitter, the key difference between the two is in the outlook, he said.

Koo was launched in March 2020. Bidawatka said the only thing they had in mind was the audience in India, where a major population cannot speak in English or speaks in broken English. Koo enables a person to express their thoughts and opinions in their own language, he said, adding that Koo also helps in connecting with people who speak the same language.


To have an ‘immersive experience’, he said, in-depth translation tools and a scope to express oneself in the native language was absolutely necessary. This feature is missing in all other Chinese and American apps, Bidawatka said, adding that this is where Koo stands out from other applications.  


Asked how the political leaders are making use of Koo ahead of the assembly elections in some Indian states, Bidawatka said they have been sharing regular updates to make sure they reach the maximum number of audience. The number of likes and comments on those posts also act as markers pointing at the likeability of the posts, he said.


Talking about the feature of ‘banning’ a user over an offensive statement, Bidawatka said that unlike Twitter, Koo believes in moderating a statement rather than directly banning the user.


At a time when data-protection is the need of the hour, the Koo co-founder said that some of India’s top ethical hackers have been roped in to boost the security of this app.


Asked about the growth of the Koo app, Bidawatka said that the acceptance and expansion have been overwhelming. Koo has eight languages and users range from celebrities from different fields such as sports, politics and films, to common public.


Eying on expanding the app to other countries too, Bidawatka concluded the interview by saying Koo is an app that helps take a certain opinion from a close-friend circle to a larger audience, thereby making you feel that your opinion matters.
