Renowned actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder, Vijayakanth, also known as Vijayakant, faced a health setback with the hospital indicating a need for "a small amount" of pulmonary support on Wednesday. The 71-year-old was hospitalized in a private facility in the city on November 18. Following this, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has extended his heartfelt wishes for the actor's swift recovery.

In a bulletin, MIOT International said that Vijayakanth, who had been hospitalised a few days ago, was showing "great improvement" initially, but in the past 24 hours his condition "mildly" worsened. He was then given pulmonary support.

"We continue to be confident that he will show a full recovery. Possible length of stay in hospital is a further fourteen days," the hospital said, as per a report on PTI.

On November 18, Vijayakanth was admitted to the hospital for throat infection and fever-like symptoms.

On Wednesday, after the hospital bulletin, Rahul Gandhi took to Facebook and said, "Deeply concerned to hear about the health condition of actor and DMDK founder, Shri Vijayakanth. I join millions of his fans and followers in sending him best wishes for a quick recovery."

"My love and support to Shri Vijayakanth’s family, who are passing through this difficult time," he said.

Vijayakanth, fondly known as 'Captain', is known for his "righteous" role as a hero. He is also a producer and director.

At the peak of his acting career, Vijayakanth founded Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and he was elected as a MLA twice from Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam respectively. Vijayakanth served as Opposition leader of Tamil Nadu Assembly during 2011-16.

In the 2016 elections, however, Vijayakanth lost both of his seats and deposits in Ulundurpettai constituency. He was contesting as part of Makkal Nala Kootani alliance.
