Chennai: A private CBSE school in Madurai entered a controversy after it included a question about the “Untouchable caste of Bombay Presidency” in a question paper. The question was asked to Class 6 students during Social Science exam at Vallaba Vidyalaya School in Madurai.
A CBSE school in Arumbanur of Madurai district asked a question that went on the lines as "The community which was treated as untouchables in Bombay Presidency". The school also provided three options for the question including "Mahar", "Nayar" and "Koli".

The question was part of the Social Science question paper for Class 6 students issued on September 19 exams.
Following the question, the management has received flak.
The question has drawn flak since it reportedly indirectly aims to reinforce caste discrimination.

In July 2022, a caste-based question was asked during exams for MA in History students created an uproar among the netizens. The Periyar University asked "Which one is the lower caste that belongs to Tamil Nadu?". The question had four choice based answers with the names of four different castes.
The netizens also questioned the reason for asking such a question at the University named after EVR Periyar who fought to abolish caste system in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu government formed a committee headed by chief officer to conduct an investigation into the matter. While talking about the question paper, the VC said that the questions were prepared by another university and he was not informed about the questions.
