Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government on Monday tabled a Bill to make shops and establishments provide seating facilities to their employees during work hours under Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act, 1947 in the State Legislative Assembly.The State government decided on the move after pleas were given to him during State Labour Advisory Board Meeting held on September 4. 


According to a report on ABP Nadu, Tamil Nadu Minister for Labour Welfare and Skill Development CV Ganesan tabled a Bill to amend Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act, 1947. The new amendment to the existing Bill will be called Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments (Amendment) Act, 2021. 


According to the proposed amendment under Section 22 of Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act, 1947, "22-A. Seating facilities- The premises of every establishment shall have suitable seating arrangements for all employees so that they may take advantage of any opportunity to sit which may occur in the course of their work and thereby avoid 'on their toes' situation throughout the working hours."


The decision to table the Bill was taken after a plea was placed in the State Labour Advisory Board Meeting held on September 4 to provide seating for the employees and the same was unanimously approved by the members of the Board.

The decision was taken since persons employed in shops and establishments in the state are forced to stand throughout their duty time resulting in various health issues. Hence, the state government considering the plight of the employees has decided to table the Bill to provide seating facility for all the employees of the shops and establishments.
