Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman flew to Thoothukudi to review the situation with the district collector and interact with the people of flood-ravaged parts of the southern district in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. The Minister, after a review meeting with district administration, will visit flood-affected areas from 2 PM.

Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, Union MoS L Murugan and district MP Kanimozhi were also present.

The coastal district is gradually returning to normalcy with the state administration and civic authorities involved in relief and restoration work.


Individuals temporarily housed in relief camps are now returning home to clear the mud and debris left by the floods triggered by unprecedented rainfall on December 17 and 18 in the district, according to an official.


Conservancy workers are actively involved in clearing waste and debris from roads and residential areas. Efforts are underway to restore sections of the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur and Thoothukudi-Tiruchendur highways that were damaged.
