New Delhi: An Enforcement Directorate officer working in Madurai in Tamil Nadu was arrested for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from a doctor, police said on Friday.
The man named Ankit Tiwari, who is an Enforcement Officer with the ED, was 'caught red-handed' by Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) sleuths after he received Rs 20 lakh bribe money from the doctor, news agency PTI reported.
He was produced before the judicial magistrate in Dindigul on Friday.
"He along with his team of ED officers had been threatening several people and receiving bribes in the name of closing their case in Enforcement Directorate. DVAC (Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption) officials caught him with Rs 20 lakhs cash in Dindigul. Investigation underway. DVAC also held search at the ED Office in Madurai," ANI reported quoting the local police.
Soon after taking him into custody in Dindigul, a team of DVAC officials searched the sub-zone ED office in Madurai. During the raid, Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel were deployed by authorities inside the ED office as a 'security' measure.
The action was taken after the doctor preferred a complaint with the DVAC and Tiwari is currently being questioned by the DVAC sleuths, reported PTI.
The presence of the state police and the Central police force (ITBP, under the Central Armed Police Forces) at the same time led to a flutter for a while in the Madurai neighbourhood.
Dindigul, about 430 km from here is near Madurai and about 100 km from Tiruchirappalli in central Tamil Nadu.
