Chennai: The state government has selected Thanjavur corporation as the best performing corporation in the state. The corporation would be honored with the ‘Honorable chief minister’s award’ and a cash prize worth Rs 25 lakhs. 


In a government order dated August 9, Shiv Das Meena, additional chief secretary to the government said that the best performing municipal corporation and the best performing three municipalities in the state would be selected every year for the award. While the best performing corporation would receive a cash prize of Rs 25 lakhs, the top three municipalities would receive a sum of Rs 15 lakhs, Rs 10 lakhs and Rs 5 lakhs respectively. 


Pointing out that the award would be distributed by the chief minister MK Stalin on Independence day, the government order said that a sum of Rs 55 lakhs has been allocated for the same this year.

Based on the recommendation of the director of municipal administration, this year, Thanjavur corporation has been selected as the best performing corporation and Udhagamandalam municipality in Nilgiris district, Tiruchengode municipality in Namakkal district and Chinnamanur municipality in Theni district have been selected as the best performing municipalities, the order said. 


Meanwhile, the state government has also announced the best performing town panchayats in the state and allocated a sum of Rs 18 lakhs to distribute cash awards to the top three panchayats. They were selected based on their performance in delivering essential services like water supply, solid waste management, sanitation works, financial management, maintenance of street lights, poverty alleviation, public health, and special initiatives.


Another government order also signed by Shiv Das Meena said that Kallakudi panchayat in Trichy district, Melpattampakkam panchayat in Cuddalore district and Kottaiyur panchayat in Sivagangai district were selected as the best performing panchayats and a sum of Rs 10 lakhs, Rs 5 lakhs and Rs 3 lakhs would be distributed to them as cash awards respectively.
