Chennai: Tamil Nadu conducted a third vaccination drive and inoculated 24.85 lakh doses of COVID-19 vaccine, which was more than the set target of 15 lakhs mark on Sunday. Among those who took the vaccines on Sunday, 14.9 lakh people took first doses and 9.95 lakh second doses.
According to a report on DT Next, the state government set a target to vaccinate 15 lakh people across the state on Sunday through 23, 436 centres including primary health centres, government hospitals and schools. However, Tamil Nadu achieved the set target within 2.30 pm of the vaccination drive yet the state continued with the vaccination.
The state inoculated the highest number of 2.13 lakh people from Chennai followed by Cuddalore administering 1.15 lakh vaccine doses. The other districts including Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchu and Thanjavur also inoculated 1.13 lakh vaccine doses on Sunday. The least number of vaccinations were reported from Ramanathapuram and Paramakudi.

On Sunday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inspected a few vaccination centres in Chennai with Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaiam and Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan.
With the third mega vaccination drive, the state government exhausted all the vaccines delivered to them by Union government. Hence, the state will start the inoculation drive only when the doses arrive from the Centre, said Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam.
Tamil Nadu recorded 1,694 new COVID-19 cases and 14 deaths on Sunday. The number of active cases in the state increased on the 19th day in a row. The state currently has 17,285 active COVID-19 cases across the state. In Chennai, 200 people tested positive for COVID-19 taking the active number of cases in the state to 2,087 patients.
