Tamil Nadu Rains: IMD Predicts Heavy Downpour For Next 5 Days Due To Formation Of Low Pressure Area

The very heavy rains are expected to continue on November 11 with downpour pounding Cuddalore, Villupuram, Puducherry, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts, RMC said.

Chennai:  Heavy rains will continue for the next 24 hours in parts of Tamil Nadu due to the expected formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, said Puviarasan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre in Regional Meteorological Centre. He said on Monday, many districts have been issued an orange alert which might be changed to a red alert if the intensity of the low-pressure increases leading to heavy rainfall.

According to a press release on Monday, the RMC said, “There is a possibility for the formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday. Following this, the low-pressure is likely to intensify into a depression in the next 24 hours after the low-pressure formation. “

As a result, RMC said, heavy to very heavy rains will continue in Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Puducherry, Delta districts and Karaikal for the next 24 hours. Heavy rainfall will continue in Chennai, Tiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvalur, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Dharmapuri, Coimbatore, Karur and Namakkal on Monday. 

After a respite to some regions on Tuesday, the RMC said, very heavy rainfall will once again lash Delta districts, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kalakurichi, Puducherry and Karaikal districts after the formation of a low-pressure area on Wednesday. Heavy rains will also likely lash Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvannamalai districts.

Parts of districts including Coimbatore, Tirupur, Theni, Nilgiris and Madurai will also likely experience rain on October 10, the RMC predicted.

Puviarasan said, “A low-pressure area is expected to form on November 9 so the low pressure will intensify on November 10-12. Currently, we have given an orange alert but based on the intensification we will give a red alert if required. “

“For the next 24 hours, there are chances for heavy rains in Chennai. However, between November 10-11, there is a possibility for very heavy rains,” he said.
