More Rain Predicted For Tamil Nadu, Schools Closed In Chennai. Many Areas Waterlogged

Moderate rain and thunderstorm is expected in several coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, such as Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, Chennai and Chengalpattu.

The capital city Chennai continues to receive heavy downpours compelling schools to remain shut as incessant rain lashes Tamil Nadu with predictions for more. Several areas also witnessed waterlogging in the city. The Regional Meteorology Centre predicted heavy to moderate rainfall in the coastal areas throughout the day.

The Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu woke up to heavy rain caused by a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. 

The Meteorological Centre in Chennai reported, “Moderate thunderstorms and lightning with moderate rain are very likely at a few places over Thiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Slipper Nagapattinam, and Thiruvarur districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area.”

On Wednesday evening, various regions of Tamil Nadu, notably the capital city of Chennai, experienced continuous rainfall, resulting in flooding across multiple areas in the city and neighbouring districts of Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpet. The incessant rain disrupted vehicular movement in several areas, mainly impacting Sholinganallur in the IT corridor and affecting many crucial arterial roads.

Railway sources told PTI, "There is a delay in operation' in suburban services in view of water logging over railway tracks in the Ambattur-Avadi-Arakkonam sections. In both the arrival and departure of flights, some delay was experienced due to the showers, airport sources said. All arrangements are in place to prevent inundation of runways."

The low-pressure system over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea is likely to concentrate into a depression on November 30 and later into a cyclonic storm. Due to the cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and the existing low-pressure system, widespread rainfall is anticipated across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry until December 3.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Chennai and its neighbouring districts on December 2 and 3, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Chief Minister MK Stalin directed ministers, legislators and representatives of local bodies to provide all necessary support to the people in rain-affected areas, as per a PTI report.
