The Fire and Rescue Department has said that at least one person has died in an explosion in a firecracker manufacturing factory near Sattur in Virudhunagar district today, news agency ANI reported on Friday. The rescue teams reached the spot and rescue operation was underway. 






According to ANI, the deceased person has been identified as Shanmugaraja (38). Fire and Rescue Department said, "One person died in an explosion in a firecracker manufacturing factory near Sattur in Virudhunagar district today," as quoted by ANI.


A person, identified as Shanmugaraja, was handling chemicals to make crackers in one of the working sheds when the accident took place. On information, the Fire and Rescue team rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire, ANI reported, citing a Fire and Rescue department source. The body of the deceased was taken out and sent to a nearby hospital.


A case has been registered by the Police and are conducting further investigation. Sivakasi in Virudhunagar District is known as the hub of firecrackers in India. It has more than 6.5 lakh families, directly and indirectly, dependent on this industry for their livelihood.


Last month, a tank filled with acid burst open at a chemical factory in Ranipet burst district of Tamil Nadu. No casualties or injuries were reported, ANI reported, citing an official. Large amounts of acid and toxic fumes filled the area, causing breathing issues and eye irritation to the factory workers and others in the area.


In October, a massive fire broke out in a factory in Delhi's Peera Garhi area. Around 33 fire tenders were deployed at the spot to douse the blaze. No injuries were reported in the incident.
