Chennai: Makkal Needhi Maiam Founder Kamal Haasan on Thursday announced that his party would contest alone in the upcoming rural local body polls that are scheduled to take place in nine districts of Tamil Nadu on October 6 and October 9.
In a statement, Kamal Haasan said that Makkal Needhi Maiam would contest alone in the rural local body elections of nine districts.

Pointing out that this is going to be the first local body election that the party is going to contest, he said that he would campaign in support of the party candidates in the districts. “Those who are willing to contest in the election on behalf of the party, can approach the district or state party office directly. To ensure quick access, online application forms have also been created,” he said.
Earlier, PMK announced its decision to exit the AIADMK-led alliance and contest alone in the upcoming rural local body elections.
The Tamil Nadu Election Commission on Monday announced rural local body elections for the newly created nine districts - Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Tirupattur, Villupuram and Vellore - of the state in two phases on October 6 and October 9. The votes would be counted on October 12.

A total of 76,59,720 voters including 37,77,524 men, 38,81,361 women and 835 transgender people are eligible to cast their votes in the upcoming election. The polling would take place between 7 am and 6 pm. The last hour between 5 pm and 6 pm would be reserved for COVID-19 patients to cast their votes. The candidates can start filing their nominations from September 15 and the last date for filing nominations will be September 20.
