Chennai: A doctor who drove through a flooded underpass drowned in Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu. According to reports, a doctor identified as C Sathiya, working at a Government Hospital in Hosur, was driving through a railway underpass that was flooded for several feet due to the heavy rains in Thudaiyur.

She was travelling in a car with her mother-in-law and she reportedly saw a lorry in the darkness on the other side of the road. However, unaware of the depth, she drove till the car stopped and soon the doors jammed, stopping her and her mother-in-law from escaping.

Speaking to The News Minute, DSP D Sivasubramian of Keeranur police said that Sathiya immediately called her husband once the car started sinking and told him to send people for help. However, when the people arrived they were only able to save the injured mother-in-law and they moved her out of the car. However, all the more since the seat belt of Sathiya too got stuck, it made it impossible to pull her out and she drowned in the water.

Both of them were taken to Pudukkottai Government Hospital. However, Sathiya was declared dead on arrival while her mother-in-law is recovering from the injuries.

Sathiya and her husband, who is an engineer, were both living in Hosur. However, on the fateful day, she picked up her mother-in-law to go to a relative's home in Pudukkottai.

The DSP said the locals had been protesting for a long time demanding a different route due to the flooding issue and had arranged one.  The officials have also pumped out the water from the underpass.
